Hotel Monasterio, Cusco, Peru

When the Bishop of Cuzco built the Seminary of San Antonio Abad during the 16th Century for the purpose of training catholic priests, it is certain he had no idea that five centuries later it would be converted into a luxury hotel run by the exclusive Orient-Express Hotels group.

At 3,000 metres above sea-level, Hotel Monasterio is surrounded by the colourful sights of Cusco, a city renowned for its blend of Inca and Spanish culture, and most of its 126 Spanish colonial-style rooms offer views of either the city or the peaceful inner courtyard. The high-altitude hotel is also a national landmark, and as such, it has maintained much of its original renaissance charm including a central courtyard with a 300-year-old Cedar tree and the famous stone cloisters which still feature the Spanish Coat of Arms.
